Homestead Tips #1 – Lamb Milk Replacer for Poddies

When looking after sheep, I never had much luck on having healthy poddies with commercially purchased milk replacers. But, when I stumbled upon a home made lamb milk replacer, I never had a lamb be ill, get scours, or do anything but thrive.

Here’s the recipe:

  • 2L of full cream cow’s milk (fresh or UHT)
  • 60mL/1/4 cup of cream
  • 1-2 eggs (1 big egg, 2 medium/small)

Mix it up fresh, store in the fridge, and feed via bottle as you would any other milk replacement.

Since I first got this recipe years ago, I’ve heard of variations for goat kids as well, but I’ve not tried them yet, as I moved to town after living on properties and got an office job (gah, I know!). So for now, I don’t have room for sheep or goats, but one day I will again!

If you try this recipe, let me know how you go!
